UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring several personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
