The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
