Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

A freshly coined initialism came to light a few months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is found only in Gaza, according to doctors like child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for physicians to attend to a young patient who has lost their entire family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that atrocities are still being committed. The Israeli government has denied these accusations, just as it disavows all charges it is implicated in. Yet as traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, we are told, is what global togetherness resembles.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from participating in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A competition that initially championed harmony has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
