At least 64 Killed in Rio's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
No less than 64 individuals died in a security raid targeting the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's past.
Four police officers were among those killed during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. Over 80 suspects were detained.
Intense confrontations commenced when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization reacted using armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives said.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "horrified" by the police operation, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Operation Impact
The area of favelas adjacent to the city's international airport is regarded as the main base of a major criminal organizations.
Government representatives said a minimum of 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Local Reaction
Community members have likened the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.
